Company Profile

Woody Player was a man of vision. In 1948 after a stint in the Navy, Woody, a native of Lancaster, SC., enrolled in United Television Laboratories in Louisville, Kentucky, graduating in 1950. In the early fifties realizing the impact television would have on the lives of Americans, Woody moved to Charlotte and opened a small television service company. Thus, in 1952 Queen City Television Service Company was born. Located in a small building off South Tryon Street in Charlotte, North Carolina, the business started with three television servicemen.

In the early 50's American Trust Bank, predecessor to Bank of America, had a large number of repossessed televisions that were in need of repair. Rather than pay for repairs, the bank sold the sets to Woody at a very low cost which he repaired and then turned around and sold them at a small profit. Realizing the potential in sales, Queen City expanded beyond the back of the television to the front side and started selling Motorola's. In 1964 Woody purchased an area tv service company and took the first steps in expanding his retail business. The late 60's brought the addition of appliance sales and service and additional store locations in Charlotte.

The late 70's thru the 90's brought the next Player generation into the company. With their help, Woody began expanding the family owned business beyond the immediate Charlotte area, opening numerous stores in the contiguous counties including his home state of South Carolina.

In 2003 Queen City began building innovative new stores and updating existing stores, creating "lifestyle kitchens" and showcasing home theatres. The newest retail store has a Design Center featuring 5 working kitchens which allow customers to experience the performance and benefits of top-of-the-line appliances in home-like settings that include high-end custom cabinetry and countertops.

Flash forward to today and you will find Queen City stores located throughout the Carolina's. Today Queen City is recognized as the region's largest independent audio, video and appliance retailer.

Recently renovated, the corporate campus includes a newly remodeled builder design center and the addition of a retail sales area. These additions showcase the finest lines and latest technology in kitchen appliances and in home entertainment systems.

Woody passed away in 2002 but his business philosophy has been firmly instilled in the family. The current Player generation knows that service is the most important product they offer. With a commitment to unsurpassed service, certified product specialists, guaranteed low price and the best in brand selection, we ensure our customers will always receive the Right Product, Right Price and Real Answers....GUARANTEED!
